What is it?

Building materials that have the potential to be hazardous to human health. Common hazardous materials include:


  • Asbestos
  • Lead (including paint and dust)
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
  • Synthetic Mineral Fibres (SMFs)
  • Chemicals

Your obligations

Under work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation the person in control of a business or undertaking (PCBU) has an obligation to assess the potential risks and develop a hazardous materials register for building compliance.


Additionally any hazardous materials found on site must be managed, labelled and stored correctly, and if applicable have up to date Saftey Data Sheets (SDS) available.
