LONG BAY JAIL CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

ASBESTOS CONTAMINATED SOIL REMEDIATION

December 2015

JMBEC was called out to inspect the soils surrounding new recreational areas located at  Long Bay Correctional Facility, Matraville.

A partially demolished structure, containing hidden asbestos cement products had contaminated the surrounding soils.  This material had accidentally been relocated and used as fill in a small corner of a new rec yard.

JMBEC was able to ascertain the extent of the contamination, and isolate the remediation area.  We prepared an asbestos in soil report for the jail to use to engage a class B licensed excavation contractor.  JMBEC provided continuous air monitoring, and clearance certificates in order to clear the yards for reoccupation, and allow restrictions associated with the asbestos removal to be lifted.

All fibre counting was conducted in JMBEC’s NATA accredited lab, and air monitoring reports were issued the same day.
