JMB Environmental Consulting Pty Ltd was engaged by the University of Newcastle to a conduct pre-demolition hazardous materials survey at one of their iconic buildings University House (UNH).

The university project teams has some upcoming building works that require demolition of wall, ceiling and floor linings. T

The university projects teams are fantastic to work with as they understand the risks associated with potentially hidden asbestos (and other hazardous materials), and always chose the right course of action prior to any works.

As it turns out, we identified some asbestos containing adhesive to the thermoplastic skirting trim throughout the facility that was not identified in the management survey. Without this type of inspection, this material may have been unknowingly disturbed during their proposed works, unnecessarily exposing workers and building occupants to asbestos fibres.

Pre demolition or refurbishmant surveys are essential in order to find hidden hazardous materials that will not have been identified in an asbestos management survey. These materials will pose a significant health risk to trades, builders and other building occupants during demolition and refit.

Unearthing unknown asbestos (and other hazardous materials) can also impact the timeline of your project and could add significant costs.

Ensure you know what you are up against. There should be no surprises.
